It was started by a couple of brands, but now almost all nail polish brands, from the cheapest to some of the more expensive ones, offer at least one color of shatter (or crackle, as some other brands call it). While it is usually a bit more expensive than regular nail polish, one bottle of shatter offers endless possibilities.As the polish dries it separates on the nail creating a broken look over your initial color.  What you get is a customized look without having to go pay for nail art/manicure.  Plus, due to the effect you don’t have to worry about being overly neat or perfect with your application.  However there are some tricks getting the ideal look.Think contrasting colors- This one would seem to be a no-brainer, but it is worth mentioning.  Since the polish is black it won’t show up well over darker colors.  Bright colors result in the most noticeable effect.Use a clear polish before applying Black Shatter- If you apply the black shatter directly on top of your base color, the base color will not come through as vibrant.  The base color will look dulled out and upon closer inspection it will appear to have been “eaten away”.  If you apply a top coat over your base coat, the results will be much better.  Black shatter will not only ‘shatter’ cleaner, but the base color will show through much brighter.Use a top coat to finish- Black shatter by itself does not have a shiny finish, it is pretty matte.  The matte finish is more evident with you don’t apply a clear coat over your base color.  The overall look is better and more ‘professional’ looking with a top coat to finish.  Some people also have experienced the black flaking off without a topcoat to seal it.For those looking for something special to do with their nails without having to visit the nail salon picking up a bottle of Black Shatter is a great solution. Normally girls wear nail polish as a symbol of personality. Example: Wearing none is usually earthier thing, Pink is girly, Red is bold, Black is more gothic, Blue is calm or if you love the ocean, etc. Nail polish can also represent favorite colors! Though a lot of people see it as a pretty addition to your look, it can also accessorize an outfit that you just so happen to be wearing. It's not a problem if you're a girl and you don't wear any, but it can be seen as one if you're a boy and wear nail polish.
